Binding A Book At Home

Book Binding is the process of physically assembling a book or other large document. This may be done using a number of folded or unfolded pages, yet sometimes does involve the use of other materials. Once the binding itself is completed, a cover is usually attached to the pages. This process began in India and was spread by Buddhist monks during the first century B.C. Binding is very beneficial for sketchbooks, blank journals or e-books. This may seem like a difficult undertaking, yet book binding is very simple and you can do it yourself in no time at all.

The first step is to assemble your materials. This may involve printing the pages yourself or gathering them together into a recognizable collection. You may print each page to a full side of paper. If you wish, print odd pages on one side of the paper, flip the paper over and print the even pages on the other side. This will give your collection the look and feel of a traditional book. You may also print the pages in booklet format which will require that you superimpose the pages. Software may be purchase for this task. Once all pages have been printed, put them into the correct order and proceed with the book binding.

Once you have the printed material, you will need glue and a clamp to hold the pages together. If a cover is desired, now is the time to make it or collect the material you will be using. It has been found that heavy stock paper makes a great covering material so, if you are at a loss for a cover, choose this in your preferred color. Designs or pictures may be printed on card stock and this step needs to be completed before assembly.

Take the pages and clamp them together along the spine in the correct order. Glue the pages together and allow them to dry. Once the glue has dried, it is time to add the cover. Add glue to the inside edge of the cover and fold it to wrap it around the book. Let this dry overnight and your book binding is complete. This is a great way to store your child’s artwork or special school papers. You may also use this technique to present a series of original poems for a loved one. The ideas are endless, yet whatever you decide to bind, be assured your gift will be treasured for years to come by the recipient.
